Uncover Your Inner Advocate: Unlocking Confidence and Assertive Communication for Women's Empowerment

I was five years old when I first told someone to metaphorically "f*ck off", and it was the very beginning of my journey to helping women own their power and stand up for themselves.

I was in kindergarten and a girl in my class called my mom, "ugly".

If you could have seen the flames coming out of my ears and my eyes bulging at the audacity, you would not have envisioned a 6-year old with a Dorothy Hamill haircut and red-rimmed bifocals.

I didn't cry. I gave her a piece of my mind. I told her how much I loved my mom and how what she said wasn't nice and how it hurt me. I asserted myself in a manner that made me feel empowered. I didn't swallow it. I didn't pretend it didn't make me sad. I didn't avoid her or the elephant in the room. I took it head on.

There are a number of stories of me just like that throughout my childhood and teenage years, and in retrospect, the writing was on the wall. This was my skill to teach by example. Ironically, it was years later, when I protected and defended that same girl when another classmate put gum in her hair on a cringeful, right of passage camping trip as a middle schooler.

While the social scenarios look slightly different as an adult, the self-advocacy skill set still remains the same. It is vital that women embrace this same courage in their adult lives as they work to build confidence and master assertive communication.

In today's fast-paced world, women face unique challenges across various roles such as being partners, professionals, or mothers. Having the confidence to advocate for oneself and stand firm in our convictions and decisions is essential for navigating these challenges effectively. When paired with assertive communication, confidence can empower women to voice their needs, desires, and opinions boldly, paving the way to fulfilling lives both personally and professionally.

The Power of Confidence

Confidence is not just a buzzword; it is the bedrock of personal and professional success. Research shows that women with higher self-confidence are 75% more likely to take risks and pursue leadership opportunities, leading to better career outcomes. When women believe in their value, they project strength and self-assurance in their interactions with others - spouses, friends, family, PTA moms, healthcare professionals, bosses, and colleagues, alike.

Confidence impacts every aspect of life—from setting personal boundaries to negotiating salaries, to not feeling the need to over-explain themselves and their decisions. For instance, women who assert their worth in salary negotiations often secure pay increases. Women who don't feel the need to explain their parenting choices are happier, and I would bet their relationship with their partner is healthier when they know how to navigate compromise without compromising their needs.

According to a study by the American Association of University Women, women who negotiate their starting salaries can earn upwards of $1 million more over their careers compared to those who don’t. Recognizing your strengths and using them to your advantage is crucial and could literally be costing you big bucks by keeping your thoughts to yourself.

Mastering Advocacy Through Assertive Communication

Effective communication is the tool that helps us convey our confidence and messages clearly and respectfully. Assertiveness allows us to express our needs without diminishing others’ feelings and it creates a space for open dialogue with compassion, empathy, and understanding, while also not wavering from our own needs. On the flip side we have aggression, which involves a tug of war over power. When we feel threatened or dismissed it can become a lot more like a pissing contest than a productive conversation. Not helpful.

This is why I am launching Find Your Voice, a 6-week blueprint to confident communication and self-advocacy for the empowered modern woman.

Harnessing assertive communication empowers women to advocate for their needs—whether that means saying “no” when overwhelmed or sharing ideas in meetings without fear, or telling your partner why you need him to do the grocery shopping and make his own list.

Mastering the Juggling Act: Excelling at Balancing Relationships, Careers, and Motherhood!

Women frequently juggle multiple roles in life, and we are overwhelmed now, more than ever. As partners, we can enhance our relationships by expressing our feelings and needs clearly. Communicating own desires fosters understanding and strengthens connections. Research indicates that couples who practice clear communication experience higher satisfaction in their relationships.

In the professional sphere, advocating for oneself can lead to greater opportunities. For example, a confident woman may aim for leadership roles, breaking glass ceilings for herself and paving the way for others in her field. Each time you assert your worth, you contribute to a better workplace for all women. We lift each other up, and we will do that inside this training of like-minded rockstars.

Motherhood introduces its own set of challenges, often forcing women to prioritize their families above their own needs. Modeling confidence and self-advocacy to our children is essential. Openly discussing the importance of self-worth and communication with kids helps them understand the value of voicing their opinions. By doing this, we model for our kids what we want them to believe about themselves.
